Early Years Time

Women in my mother's time were generally considered inferior to their male siblings ;
the reason I say this is because if a family only have enough funds to educate some but not all children, the sons will get the education but not the daughters like in my mother's family .
Her elder sister got some education because she wanted it and grandma barter for her education by doing the teacher's laundry as we were told by our aunties.
It may also be women were considered to be 'married off' & belonging to another family while the
sons will still remain in the family to help earn money

This lack of educational opportunity affected our mother's opportunities in life and our subsequent upbringing. However she gave us freedom of choice in many ways while we were growing up.
Just as well education became more available to everybody when we were growing up and in turn give us more options in life with the education we receive.

I exercise compassion when growing up - bought some gift of food to young lady who lost her partner .
Gave free tuition to a primary school kid whose family could not quite afford to pay for tuition .
I guess some kind teachers & Christian youth clubs voluntary leaders also have some influence in my growing up years .

Growing up in Singapore in the 60’s
Personal histories memories

We live in the kampung first at Paya Lebar with my father’s relatives , then
in Siglap with my mother’s.
Many families live together in a multi room house.
The neighbourhood also has artisan shoe/clog making shops etc
The hawkers normally ply/sell their food stuff
around the neighbourhood
We were not in the habit of spending money freely to buy snacks outside
normal meal times
When Singapore became independent from the Straits Settlements , I lost money in
my piggy bank account as the old currency got devalued and a new currency was
introduced
Nobody told me anything , I was only a kid and got v upset when it happened
From there on , I stop saving my coins in my piggy bank
As children , we could generally wander & play freely around the neighbourhood.
On CNY , we get red packets containing money .
We will treat ourself to satay from the travelling satay man parked near the coffee shop.
As kids we wash our own school shoes each weekend . We had to whiten our shoes with a white
shoe paste after washing .
